CONNECTING IOWANS TO THE WORLD Community

Recent & Upcoming Activities

  • ISS is working to set up an electronic Pen Pal Program between Jr. High students in Iowa and those in Cherkasy. We are still in the beginning process of this and hope to have it running at the start of the 2016-17 Academic Year.
  • ISS has been working with Cherkasy contacts on setting up virtual round table discussions per their topics of choice. Mostly the subject matters revolve around legal matters and civil liberties.
  • Thanks to a recent visit to Des Moines, there is now a newly formed IT association in Cherkasy.
  • ISS has been able to make a solid contact with the Governor of Cherkasy. Nothing further than that has been done. ISS is working to maintain communication at this point. Newton, Iowa has a sister city in Cherkasy Oblast and we work with them when possible to improve our Iowa to Cherkasy communications.

History

Cherkasy Oblast, located in the heart of Ukraine, entered into a Sister State partnership with the State of Iowa in 1996. An agreement was signed between Governor Terry Branstad of Iowa and Governor Vasyl Tsybenko of Cherkasy. This relationship has resulted in several professional, educational and cultural exchanges. Our Cherkasy volunteers works closely with oblast administrative government and the Cherkasy Women's Center.
