State Agreement with Iowa
Cherkasy Oblast is one of the 25 regions of Ukraine. Located just south and
east of Kyiv (capital of Ukraine), Cherkasy Oblast is involved in agriculture
and pork production much like Iowa. This made them a prime candidate for Sister
State status. The official agreement was signed in 1996. Geography
The Cherkasy Oblast is located in the central part of Ukraine. The region has
an area of 20,900 sq. kilometers or about 4% of the national territory.
The greatest Ukrainian river Dnieper crosses the territory of the oblast. The
Cherkasy oblast borders are: Kyiv Oblast on the north; Kyiv and Vinitsa
Oblasts on the west; Kirovograd Oblast on the south; and Poltava Oblast
to the east.
Top Government
The Oblast Government is composed of a non-elected executive branch, The Regional
State Administration. Elected legislative branch, Oblastna Rada, currently
has 65 members. The Oblast is subdivided administratively into 20 districts
(rayons). Each rayon has its own administration, all towns and villages have
a local government as well.
Population
Approximately 1,500,000 inhabitants. Cherkasy (the Oblast capital) has a population
of around 300,000. Uman, Kaniv, Zolotonosha, Smila are also major cities.
Agriculture
The Oblast has well-developed agriculture. It produces 9% of all Ukrainian
sugar-beets and 5% of all corn. Cattle-farming is also developed.
Top Industries
Major industries are: chemical, food processing, machine-building, textile
production. Manufacturing: fertilizers, food products, agricultural equipment,
garments, clothing, food processing equipment, optical devices, furniture,
construction materials.
Transportation
The Cherkasy Oblast has a well-developed transportation structure. Cherkasy
is an important river port on the Dnieper. The main part of the movement
of goods is provided by rail transport. An airport is located in Cherkasy.

Kanev - Taras Shevchenko Memorial; Chygyryn - B. Khmelnitsky Memorial; Uman
- "Sofiyivka" park (XVIII century), registered by UNESCO as an outstanding
creation of mankind.
