With only three paid staff, Iowa Sister States relies on its volunteers to provide the creativity and energy to conduct these programs. Over 800 people volunteer for ISS. They are from all across the state and from all walks of life. Some are retired and some are students, but all share an interest in other countries and other cultures.
To get their work done, our volunteers organize themselves into country committees. They then elect a chair, schedule meetings, and plan and conduct programs. Participation in the meetings is strictly voluntary—whoever is interested shows up and participates. We facilitate participation by scheduling our meetings in the evenings or on the weekends. People may also participate by teleconference or videoconferencing using the Iowa Communications Network.
Iowa Sister States is also available to speak to your club or organization about what we do. We have both PowerPoint and slide show presentations, and the presentation is easily accomodating to any time slot. Please consider having ISS come and talk to your organization about our programs and international volunteerism.
