Sister State Agreement with Iowa
Iowa-Veneto Sister States = Gemellaggio Veneto-Iowa
The sister state relationship between Iowa and the Veneto Region
of Italy is Iowa's newest agreement signed in 1997. The Veneto
Region has a sister state relationship with Hebei Province in China,
which is, coincidentally, also one of Iowa's sister states.

The Veneto Region is located in the northeast of Italy. The region
has an area of 18,364 sq. km. (11,385 sq. miles), or about 6% of
the national territory. The Veneto is roughly divided into three
characteristic geographical areas: coastal areas, flatlands and
mountains. The Veneto Region's borders are Lake Garda, the Mincio
River and the Regions of Lombardy and Trentino-Alto Adige on the
west; the Po River and the Regions of Lombardy and Emilia-Romagna
on the south; the Po delta, Adriatic coast, Venetian lagoon, Livenza
and Tagliamento Rivers, and the Region of Friuli-Venezia Giulia
on the east and the Dolomite Mountains and Austria to the north.
The character of the prefecture is both urban and rural, with many
towns and cities, extensive agricultural areas and dramatic mountain
landscapes.
Top Government
The Regional Government is composed of an elected executive branch,
the Giunta Regionale. The Giunta is headed by a President, and
administered by department heads (Assessori). The elected legislature,
the Consiglio Regionale, currently has 59 members representing
ten political parties. The Region is subdivided administratively
into seven Provinces: Venezia, Verona, Vicenza, Padova, Treviso,
Belluno, Rovigo. Each municipality and town and its surrounding
area has a government (commune) as well.
