Volunteer Engagement and Outreach

As a growing organization with friends around the world, we're always looking for more help. There are countless roles available for volunteers, and we can help you find the one that best suits you.

The Volunteer Engagement and Outreach Team will develop, organize, and recruit specific volunteer teams. For each team listed below, volunteers will be able to choose to be country specific or "general." While not stated, each team below will also require a chair. Current team listings are below, but new ones will be added if the need arises.

Agriculture Project Team

This team will develop and manage agriculture related projects and programs.

Art Project Team

This team will develop and manage art-related projects and programs.

Business Development Opportunity Team

This team will develop and manage business-related projects and programs.

Corporate Relations Team

This team will work with ISS staff to set up corporate visits for the purpose of future partnerships and to seek out interest in financial support.

Education Project Team

This team will develop and manage education-related projects and programs.

General Sister State Volunteer

(for a particular sister state relationship)

In this category, you sign up to attend the committee meetings for a particular relationship. You can assist the Chair and others in looking at strategic vision for the relationship, along with helping staff in putting together schedules for in-bound and out-bound delegations.

Expected time commitment: 6 meetings per year

Gifting Team

This team will work on the issue of a sister state specific gift (and gifting levels) for visiting delegations.

Grant Research/Application Team

This team will work closely with ISS staff to identify grant opportunities and pursue them.

Historical Preservation Team

(for the purposes of the organization)

This team will track and list out current organization-specific historical documents.

Home Host Team

This team will recruit, manage, organize, and train host families for visiting delegations

Official Delegation (inbound and outbound) Team

This team is responsible for meet and greet at the airport for visiting delegations, and assisting with any luggage requirements. This team is also responsible for assisting visiting delegations with transportation to the airport at the end of their visit.

Outreach/Informational Team

(Willing to do cultural based programming)

This team will develop and deliver programming for the general public.

Special Event Team

This team will develop, manage, and implement special events.

Sport Project Team

This team will develop, manage, and implement sport related projects and programs.

Social Media Team

This team will support the efforts of the Communications Specialist position.

Transportation Team

This team will be on-call as needed with delegations to provide transportation. (Mostly in the central Iowa area.) Mileage is not paid for this volunteer position unless agreed upon between the volunteer and the ISS Executive Director. Mileage that would be considered for reimbursement is when the travel is extensive. Volunteers on this committee will be given advanced notice of in-bound delegations. ISS does not expect that you will always drive your own car; it is possible you will be the driver of a rented van.

Volunteer Manager

This position will lead the Volunteer Engagement and Outreach Team and work with ISS staff to coordinate all the teams that comprise the Volunteer Engagement and Outreach Team.

Young Professional Development Team

This team will develop and recruit members to work on YP-specific programs and projects.

Honorary Board of Directors Advisors Team

The Honorary Board of Advisors Team will organize the Honorary Board of Advisors in partnership with staff. (A full description of the Honorary Board of Advisors is in the Iowa Sister States by-laws.) All recommendations for the Honorary Board should be given to them as well.

Expected Time Commitment: 2 meetings per year

Team Members: Flexible, goal of 2 per year

By-Laws Team

The By-Laws Team is responsible for review and revision of the organization’s by-laws on an annual basis.Revisions must be submitted to the Board of Directors at the winter board meeting to be considered prior to the annual meeting.

Expected Time Commitment: 2-3 meetings per year

Finance Team

The Finance Team shall assist the Treasurer and ED with duties related to financial management and budgeting. A background in financial planning and/or accounting is helpful.

Expected Time Commitment: 2-3 meetings per year

Team Members: 2

Personnel Team

The Personnel Team is responsible for supervision and annual performance review of the Executive Director. THe Personnel Team will also assist the ED in putting together job descriptions and ensuring the organization is following HR requirements. A background in human resources is helpful.

Expected Time Commitment: 2 meetings per year as needed –(mostly email work)

Team Members: 1-2

Fundraising and Development Team

This team is responsible for working with staff and others who are appropriate to support the fundraising efforts of the organization. Fundraising goals for budgeting purposes need to be submitted to the Finance Team in a timely manner. A background in fundraising is helpful.

Expected Time Commitment: 4-5 meetings per year

Team Members: 5

Marketing and Communications Team

The duties of the Marketing and Communications Team shall include the development and maintenance of all promotional communications in partnership with staff. This team is responsible for marketing of ISS, portraying the organization in a way that will lead to success in our mission.

Expected Time Commitment: 3-4 meetings per year

Team Members: 4-5

Strategic Planning Team

The Strategic Planning team will develop plans for long term and short-term development, including recommendations and requests for any type of modification in the present number of sister states.

Expected Time Commitment: 3-4 meetings per year

Team Members: 4-5

Governance Team

The duties of the Governance Team shall include the maintenance of all Corporate Articles, Bylaws, and Policies pertaining to the Board. This team will facilitate the training of new Board members. It will also consider conflict of interest issues pertaining to Board members or staff. A legal background is helpful for this team.

Expected Time Commitment: 2-3 meetings per year

Team Members: 2-3

Country Committee Chair Team

The Country Committee Chair Team will consist of Sister State relationship chairs (otherwise known as “Country Chairs”).This team will come together to share best practices and ideas.

As Chair (or Co-Chair) of the Country Committee of a particular sister state relationship, you will be the point person for the activities of that relationship.This position does require more time and energy than many other volunteer positions.ISS Staff does look to country committee chairs as fellow staff of ISS.

Expected Time Commitment: 2 meetings per year

Team Members: 9-10 (as needed for co-chairs)

Honorary Board of Advisors Team

The Honorary Board of Advisors Team will organize the Honorary Board of Advisors in partnership with staff. (A full description of the Honorary Board of Advisors is in the Iowa Sister States by-laws.) All recommendations for the Honorary Board should be given to them as well.

Expected Time Commitment: 2 meetings per year

Team Members: Flexible, goal of 2 per year
