COLLABORATING WITH THE CLARION-GOLDFIELD-DOWS SCHOOL DISTRICT AND KOSOVO CONSULATE
We had a great meeting this month with the Clarion-Goldfield-Dows School District leaders and the Consulate of Kosovo in Des Moines! We discussed potential partnerships and exchanges of high school students with Superintendent Joe Nelson, Principals Paul Hansch & Steve Haberman. Our Kosovo Committee Chair, Todd Jacobus, provided valuable insights to the rich relationship and history we have with Kosovo and ISS President, Teresa Parmenter, spoke on past youth programming between the two states.
During the time when Iowa is experiencing a surge of COVID infections, Iowa Sister States is happy to announce the receipt of assistance consisting of 50,000 PPE masks to be delivered to front line workers at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines. The long-term people-to-people friendship between Iowa and the Chinese Consulate General in Chicago resulted in another act of kindness and solidarity in containing COVID-19 in Iowa. Iowa Sister States has held a more than 35 year friendship and sister state relationship with Hebei Province and the Chinese Consulate fostered through a broad range of exchanges. During natural disasters and difficult times, offers of assistance between the two sister states often occur as a result of this strong relationship. After discussions between Iowa Sister States officials, Luca Berone and Karla McCollum and the Chinese Consulate in Chicago, the 50,000 PPE masks arrived with heart felt well wishes by Consul General Zhao Jian for Iowans affected by COVID-19. Iowa Sister States is a volunteer-driven, not for profit organization that fosters sustainable international partnerships that connect Iowans to the world.

Friday, January 22, 2021 – Iowa Sister States, Des Moines' Sister Cities, various Iowa Agricultural Commodity Groups and Mayor Cownie's office teamed up for a holiday gift to our Japanese sister city, Kofu, which is located within our Sister State of Yamanashi Prefecture. Symbolic gifts were shipped to celebrate the 60th Anniversary of Iowa's goodwill 'Hog Lift' that strengthened cultural and regional ties between Japan and Iowa. From Spring 2020: Our Sister State Taiwant donated 100,000 masks to the State of Iowa. Ag Secretary Mike Naig helped unload the shipment. With PPE in demand during the pandemic, we greatly appreciate the support from your sister state of Taiwan!
