Kosovo Flag Raising Ceremony

Kosovo Consulate officials have announced that they will hold a public flag raising ceremony at 8:30 am on Monday, November 20th at the Consulate of the Republic of Kosovo. The Consulate is located at 309 Court Avenue in Des Moines.

The Kosovo Consulate is Iowa’s first foreign diplomatic office. It opened in February of 2016. The Kosovo Consulate in Des Moines is Kosovo’s only 3rd diplomatic mission in the US. The Des Moines location’s main goal is to work in the areas of trade, education, agriculture and cultural exchange between Iowa and Kosovo.

Over the years, there have been many connections between Iowa and Kosovo via the Iowa National Guard and city level cultural exchanges. The relationship began to be formalized in 2011 when the Iowa National Guard and the Kosovo Security Force became partners via the National Guard Bureau’s State Partnership Program.

The partnership was further solidified and strengthened in 2013 when Iowa’s former Governor, Terry Branstad, and former Kosovo President Atifete Jahjaga, signed the sister state agreement between Iowa and the Republic of Kosovo.

Since its opening, the Kosovo Consulate has worked to build relationships throughout the state of Iowa and has been successful in working with local partners to formulate projects that offer mutual benefits to both sides.

Iowa Sister States (ISS) is a non-profit organization founded in 1985 to manage Iowa’s official relationship with foreign states, as established by the Governor of Iowa. There are 9 of these, including: Yamanashi Prefecture, Japan (1960), Yucatan, Mexico (1965), Hebei Province, China (1983), Terengganu, Malaysia (1987), Stavropol Krai, Russia (1988), Taiwan (1989), Cherkasy Oblast, Ukraine (1996), Veneto Region, Italy (1997), and Kosovo (2013).
